Paul R. Davis, Sr. 1940-2012 SPOFFORD, N.H. Paul Richard Davis, Sr., 71, of Route 9 in Spofford died Friday afternoon, January 13, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family following a lengthy illness. Paul was born at home in Wardsboro, Vt., on November 6, 1940, the son of Morton and Elsie (Reome) Davis. He was raised in Spofford and educated in Brattleboro where he attended Saint Michael's Parochial School later graduating from Saint Michael's High School, Class of 1961. For 40 years, with his wife he owned and operated Mort's Grocery on Route 9 in Spofford. Previously he worked at the former American Optical Company in Brattleboro and Electro Sonics in Spofford prior to assuming ownership of the grocery store. In his earlier years he had worked at the former Crosby Milling Company on Vernon Road in Brattleboro. Active in his community, he had been a member of the Spofford Volunteer Fire Department. Paul was a communicant of both Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Brattleboro, and Saint Margaret Mary Parish in Keene. He enjoyed golfing and had been a member of the Pine Grove Springs Country Club in Spofford. Of his other pastimes and interests, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing poker, pinochle, dominos and time shared with his family. On July 5, 1963 in Spofford he was married to Mary Holland who survives. Besides his faithful and loving wife of 48 years he is survived by one son, Paul R. Davis, Jr. and wife Rhonda of Spofford, two daughters, Kelly Davis Erunski of Keene and Julie Davis Buffum and husband Seth of West Chesterfield, two brothers, Elmer A. Davis Sr. and wife Helen of Spofford and Morton A. Davis Jr. and wife June of Wardsboro, three sisters, Ella Barber and husband Louie of Ruston, La., Sr. Shirley A. Davis, of the Sisters of Saint Joseph's in Rutland, Vt., and Bette Davis Parent of Spofford. Additionally he leaves eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth, Robert and Erwin Davis, one sister, Elsie Irene Davis, and a granddaughter, Justine Erunski. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Saint Michael's Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Richard O'Donnell, V.F. pastor, celebrant. Burial in Freidsam Cemetery will take place at a later date. Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions in Paul's name may be made to an established scholarship, in memory of his granddaughter, The Justine Erunski Scholarship Fund, in care of Keene School District, 193 Maple Avenue, Keene, N.H. 03431-2298.
