Pearl Cassidy, 90, of Gwinn, passed away Friday morning, January 20, 2012 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee. Mrs. Cassidy was born on March 22, 1921 in Palmer, a daughter of the late Samuel and Delia (Licquia) Davis. She was a 1939 graduate of Palmer High School and was a lifelong Marquette County resident, spending most of those years in Gwinn. She was married to Elmer Voegtline and together they built a home in Gwinn, harvesting the lumber themselves from the Sporley Lake area. Pearl was employed for many years at the Gossard Company in Gwinn. In later years she worked at the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base as a cook in the cafeteria. Pearl was a proud homemaker and enjoyed sewing, knitting, ceramics, baking pies, pasties, cakes and decorating cakes. She was an active member of Gwinn United Methodist Church and sang soprano in the church choir. She is survived by one son, Meynell (Donna) Voegtline of Marquette; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Peter) Frazier of Marquette; a great granddaughter, Petra Frazier; step grandsons, Dean Kempke and Douglas (Jackie) Kempke; step-great grandchildren, Jordan and Ryleigh Kempke; also numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Voegtline in 1960 and second husband, Dallas Cassidy in 1998; also several siblings, Walter and Samuel Davis, Carrie Swanson and Selina Wills. A memorial service will be held in the Canale-Gwinn Funeral Home on Wednesday at 5 p.m. with Rev. Geri Hamlen of Gwinn United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Gwinn Cemetery. Pearl's family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider the Gwinn United Methodist Church, 251 W. Jasper St., P.O. Box 354, Gwinn, MI 49841. Pearl's family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Eastwood Nursing Center for their exceptional care of Pearl over the last few months.
