Peter James McLaughlin was born on May 30, 1929 in Raeford, North Carolina, son of Earlie Morrison McLaughlin and Thomas McLaughlin. He lived in Newark, New Jersey before moving to Roselle 44 years ago. Peter was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. During the war, he served as Ammunition Foreman and lost his hearing because at the time there was no protective ear gear provided. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he attended North Carolina A & T where he studied tailoring. Mr. McLaughlin was the owner and operator of Peter J. McLaughlin, Inc., a Hess gas station franchise located in Roselle. He was honored by the Roselle branch of the NAACP because of his entrepreneurship. He would retire as a Driver from the Union County Recycling Program in Roselle. He was a member of Heard A.M.E. Church in Roselle where he sang in the Male Chorus. He also a member of the American Legion Post 229 in Roselle, the Roselle chapter of AARP, and the Roselle Active Seniors for which he served as Historian. Peter James McLaughlin passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey at the age of 81. He was predeceased by a son, Orlando McLaughlin; his parents, Earlie and Thomas McLaughlin; and siblings, Willie and Annie Jane McLaughlin. He leaves to cherish fond memories, his devoted wife of 53 years, Flonnie McLaughlin; a son, Gerald McLaughlin and his wife, Angel of East Stroudsburg, PA; 2 grandchildren, Angelique and Marcus McLaughlin; 2 sisters, Mary McCall of East Orange, NJ and Naomi Steele of Baltimore, MD; 3 brothers, Bernis McLaughlin and his wife, Margaret of Raeford, NC, Ernest McLaughlin and his wife, Gennett of Newark, NJ and Dr. George C. McLaughlin of New Brunswick, NJ and a host of other relatives and friends. This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Peter James McLaughlin.
