Peter Joseph Gilbert, age 96, a two-year resident at The Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, and formerly of the Tripps Park section of West Scranton, passed away Tuesday. His beloved wife of 62 years, Antoinette Gibilaro Gilbert, died on April 15, 2008. Born in Scranton on September 23, 1915, son of the late Joseph and Rose Colangelo Gilbert, Peter was an Army Veteran of WWII. Having served in battles and campaigns in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, he had earned the Good Conduct, American Theater Service, EAME Service (with three bronze stars) and the Victory Medals. He worked 30 years as a warehouse operator for Quackenbush in Scranton. Prior to his retirement, he worked several years for Roadway Express. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a member of St. Lucy's Church, West Scranton. A die-hard New York Yankees baseball fan, he also always kept a beautiful yard and garden as gardening was his favorite pasttime. A loving father, brother and grandfather, his life revolved around his family. He will be dearly missed. Surviving are his children, William Gilbert and wife Emily of Old Forge, and Karen Armbruster and husband Frank of Olyphant; a sister, Grace Gilbert of Scranton; grandchildren, Frank Armbruster, Amie Szumski, Brad and Scott Gilbert; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Armbruster, Lea, Gabriella and Ryan Gilbert. His family would like to thank the nurses and staff of The Jewish Home for all their care given to Peter during his stay. Preceding in death were sisters, Mary Hayes and Beatrice Pastore and a brother, Danny Gilbert. Blessing services to be conducted by Rev. Samuel J. Ferretti will be held on Saturday at 11:00AM in the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue in West Scranton. Full military funeral rites will be performed by the AMVETS Honor Guard. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Saturday at the funeral home from 10:00AM until services. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Peter's name to the American Red Cross, 208 Meadow Avenue, Scranton, 18508.
