Philip Peng, was born in Beaufort, North Borneo, now Sabah, Malaysia. He was brought up by his parents, Pastor and Mrs. Phang in a Christian home; attended Seventh-day Adventist Church Schools in Singapore, China, and the Philippines. To support himself, he took up Literature Ministry by selling "the Hope of the World" (Chinese) and "Home Physician" (English) in Singapore, China, the Philippines and Indonesia. In 1940 he married Paz Villanueva, a schoolmate. They have 3 children: Philip Jr.(deceased), Alwyn and Aileen. After his marriage he stayed in Manila until after WWII, when he and his family emigrated to Thailand in 1946. In 1976 he and his family emigrated to the U.S.A. under the sponsorship of his doctor brother Samuel. For a number of years, he taught in the public schools as a substitute teacher in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was loved by students and their parents. During his retirement days, he went to Orlando, Florida, to spend winter months with his daughter, Aileen; then returning to Virginia Beach in the Spring. Philip was a man of good character and a man of integrity. He loved to read books on religion, and biography of great men. With his friend, the late Don Brooker, they frequently spent hours at a time in the public library. Philip's favorite pastime was to watch soccer and basketball, swimming and walking. He and his brother-in-law, Nick Tolentino enjoyed vegetable gardening in summer. Being friendly and sociable, he had a number of close friends. He looked to his two older brothers, Paul and Samuel, as his role models in life; but above all, to Jesus, the perfect example he tried to follow throughout his life. He was an ex-officio elder of the Norfolk Seventh-day Adventist Church and later of the Virginia Beach Seventh-day Adventist Church. Philip is survived by wife, Paz Villanueva; son, Alwyn Peng of Fredericksburg, VA; daughter, Aileen Peng of Orlando, FL; grandson, Jason Peng and mother, Rosa Valladares-Peng of Gaithersburg, MD; older sister, Helen Fong of Angwin, CA; sister-in-law Raquel, and her husband, Nick Tolentino; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at 9 a.m. at Seventh-day Adventist Church, 4136 Holland Rd., Virginia Beach. The burial will follow in the Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
