Phyllis Joanne W. Filipowicz, 85, passed away Nov. 18, 2009. Survived by her son, Erik Scott and daughter-in-law, Janice "Mickie" Scott. Preceded in death by her husband, Edward; daughter, Judi; and parents, Henry and Doris Werner. Phyllis was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Kenosha, Wis. Phyllis and Edward were married May 30, 1944. When Edward, who was a jet fighter pilot was killed in 1953, it left Phyllis a widow at 28 years old. In order to support her family she completed her education. She received a BA in Business Education and a MA in Educational Psychology. She taught for 27 years at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Ill. She later volunteered at St. Mary Corwin Hospital for 20 years. She enjoyed conversation and games with her friends. A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at Alterra of Wynwood, 4723 Surfwood Ln. In lieu of food and flowers, memorials may be made to the Pueblo Public Library through Montgomery & Steward Funeral Directors, 1317 N. Main St., Pueblo, Colo. 81003. There will be no viewing.
