Rear Admiral John T. Coughlin, died peacefully in Virginia Beach, VA, on June 19, 2011. He was 84. Admiral Coughlin was born in Everett, Washington, and grew up in Wenatchee, Washington. He received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, from which he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class in 1950. Admiral Coughlin also attended the Naval Post Graduate School earning a Master of Science degree in 1958. He completed the Executive Management Training at Harvard Business School in 1972. Admiral Coughlin was designated a Naval Aviator in 1952 and joined Airborne Early Warning Squadron Three in Guam. His other flying assignments included serving as Officer in Charge of Patrol Squadron Thirty-One Detachment Alfa, Executive/Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron Twenty-Two, and Commanding Officer Patrol Squadron Thirty. He also served as Navigator of USS Princeton and Division Director in the Naval Electronics System Command. Selected for flag rank in 1973. Admiral Coughlin's flag assignments included the Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Commandant of the Twelfth Naval District and Commander Military Sealift Command, Pacific; Deputy Director of Logistics Directorate; and Assistant Vice Chief of Naval Operations. He retired from active duty in 1980. After retiring from the service, Admiral Coughlin stayed actively involved in Navy affairs. He served as a trustee of the Naval Academy Foundation and for years taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Naval War College in Seattle. Additionally, Admiral Coughlin, an avid gardener, served on the Board of Directors of the Master Gardener program. He served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at Saint Anne's Catholic Church. Admiral Coughlin was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, the former Mary Margaret Eagen of Seattle, WA; brother, Joseph; Patrick, Kathleen, Terri, Michael, Colleen, and Kelly; and thirteen grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Saint Andrew's Chapel, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.
