Ralph Cox
1930-2012
Whether it was golf, the Lakeway players, or Lakeway's singalong, Ralph loved all things Lakeway. Ralph Cox moved to Lakeway in 1986 with his wife, Shirley, upon retiring from Phillips Petroleum after thirty five years. It was here that Ralph and Shirley found a wonderful community in the Texas Hill Country. During his golfing days he achieved three hole in one's (two confirmed). With the Lakeway Players he made his stage debut as the Preacher in "The Best Little Courthouse in Texas" and behind the scenes building sets. He was so happy participating in Lakeway's Singalong where he was a member for many years. Ralph's pride in the work he did on the Lakeway Memorial reflected how he felt about his service in the Navy.
Ralph was born in 1930 and grew up as one of eight children on a farm outside of Tulia, TX. He graduated salutatorian from Tulia High School and worked his way through Texas Tech University earning a degree in Chemical Engineering while financing part of his tuition from a crop of popcorn.
Ralph served in the Navy as a bombardier navigator flying in an AJ "Savage". While stationed in Sanford, Fla. he fell in love with Shirley Moreland. They were married in 1954. Settling in Houston, Tx, together they raised three happy children, Marcia, Sharon, and Allen. He continued to serve his country in the Naval Reserve for twenty years. Phillips Petroleum assigned Ralph to supervise many start-up's in Europe and his last six years with Phillips were spent in Guayama, Puerto Rico.
His wife and children intend to celebrate the life of their beloved, quiet man in a ceremony at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery at a later date.
