Ralph E. Fickel, Jr.
Greenville, SC
Ralph Edward Fickel, Jr. 59, of Boone, NC, former resident of Greenville, SC, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in the Blue Ridge Parkway, from injuries received from a fall while ice climbing resulting from an ice fracture.
A man who loved adventure, books and most of all the mountains, he was born March 21, 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of Margaret Sherby Fickel of Greenville, SC and the late Ralph E. Fickel.
He was a graduate of Appalachian State University and formerly taught grade school and also college courses. He was a climbing guide and instructor for Rock Dimensions in Boone, NC. He was a veteran mountain climber for over thirty years who pioneered more than 70 first ascents on rock and ice in North Carolina, New Hampshire, Maine, the High Sierras, the Grand Tetons, the Desert Southwest and the Nepal Himalayas. He completed the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) Toprope Site Manager Course and had worked as an instructor for the North Carolina Outward Bound School. He earned certification as a Single Pitch Instructor with the Professional Climbing Instructors Association and was also certified in Wilderness First Aid through SOLO. He was associated with the Appalachian Mountain Club and the National Park Service.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two sisters, Annette Tuebner and her husband, Paul of Fairfax, VA and Mary Louise Fickel of San Diego, CA; and two nephews, Robert C. Tuebner and Nathan R. Tuebner, both of Faixfax, VA
A Memorial Service will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church.
