Born: April 11, 1926 in Rochester, NY
Education: graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1949; earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1958
Military: was a Rear Admiral, Supply Corps, in the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1980. Earned the Legion of Merit Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal; American Theatre, World War II Victory Medal; European Occupation, National Defense With One Star Medal; graduated from Naval Supply Corps School in Bayonne, NJ and graduated in 1964 from the Naval War College in Newport, RI
Employment: During his career, he served in such capacities as Special Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations; Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics and Readiness on the staff of the commander, U.S. Sixth Fleet; Executive Officer in command of the Navy Finance Center; Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics and Readiness and Fleet Supply Officer Commander in Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet
Interesting achievements: at Brighton High School, he was senior class President and was a football, basketball and track star; was also the New York State champion in the long jump
Memberships: Ancient Order of Hibernians, John Barry Division; Eucharistic Minister and usher at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis
Hobbies: Gardening and reading
Wife: The late Mary Lou Thaney Murphy, who died 8/12/2000
Sons: Daniel Murphy of Annapolis; John Murphy (and his wife Jeanette) of Queenstown, MD
Daughters: Patty Scheible (and her husband Ron) of Potomac, MD; the late Sheila Abram (and her husband Roger)
Brother: CDR John A. Murphy, USN (Ret) (and his wife Joan) of Gettysburg, PA
Grandchildren: Sarah, Erin, Caitlin, Matthew, Mark, Megan, Adam and Chris
Great-grandson: Aiden
Visitation: Sunday, November 22, 2009 from 5-8 PM at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis
Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, November 23 at 1:00 PM at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel
Interment: U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery, with full military honors
