William Ray Seward, 88, of Austin passed away December 25, 2011 at his home.

Ray was born November 9, 1923 in Liberty Hill, Texas to Norman Hubbard & Katie Cornish Insall Seward.

Ray is preceded in death by his wife Clemmie Fay Cantwell Seward, his mother and father, son Jack Simpson, and step-daughter Joyce Courtney, brothers James and Floyd Seward, sisters Fay Sherman and Ruth Carr. He is survived by son Donney Seward, daughters Linda Schumann, Lanette Rumfield, and step-daughter Wanda Armstrong. Grandchildren Lisa Shultz, Guy Jr., Gregory and Katelind Schumann, Kevin Rumfield, Heather Carter, Heidi Herndon, Forrest and Anna Haney, Donna Brandon, Gwen Cacciatore, Donnal, Kenneth and Melissa Armstrong, Nita Maxwell, Danny and Carl Hendricks, and Donney Seward Jr., numerous Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, and best friend and baseball buddy Mack Schumann.

Ray served as a member of the Army Air Corp in World War II from February 18, 1943 to March 22, 1946 as a tail gunner and airplane crew chief, where he received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon – Good Conduct Medal – Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star – Victory Ribbon – 1 Service Strip, Distinguished Unit Badge CO 124 Fe TX 1 27 Dec 45 – 2 Overseas Service Bars.

Ray resided in Austin for over 60 years where he worked as a contractor building a large portion of the houses in Northwest Austin. In 1974 he was injured and forced to retire. After retirement he became one of the best armchair baseball coaches & umpires you will ever know. He coached alongside Mack Schumann at Disch Falk Field during UT Baseball games for 30 years.

Ray was a wonderful Daddy, Papaw and friend he will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

The children would like to thank Doctors: David Garza, Gary Werntz, Arvo Neidre, Joe Gallinghouse, Pradeep Kumar and Hospice Austin for the wonderful care they have given their Daddy over the years.
