Brattleboro- Raymond Alfred, "Ray" Hemingway, 95, of Lawton Drive died early Wednesday morning, May 11, 2011 at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health. Mr. Hemingway was born in St. Albans, Vermont on December 5, 1915, the son of Fred and Matilda (Forant) Hemingway. He was raised and educated in St. Albans where he attended public schools. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army's Company A 50th Armored Infantry Battalion during the Second World War where he was stationed in both France and Germany. He was honorably discharged on October 1, 1945 at the rank of Tech Sergeant. Following the war he returned to Vermont and settled in Brattleboro and went to work for the American Optical Company where he retired from in 1981 following over 30 years of faithful service with the company. He attended Saint Michael's Episcopal Church and was a member of the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5. Of his leisure time activities he enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, cooking and Country & Western music. He was a quiet, unassuming and hardworking man devoted to his family. On July 27, 1947 at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in St. Albans he was married to Martha L. Hall who survives. Besides his wife of almost 64 years he leaves one son, Earl Hemingway and his fiancée Patty Newton of Brattleboro, a granddaughter, Jennifer Haskins Norcia and husband Adam also of Brattleboro and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Howard Hemingway and a sister who died in infancy. Graveside committal services with full military honors will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 A.M. in Morningside Cemetery. There are no calling hours at the funeral home.
