Raymond H. Evans, 84, a life long resident of Cleveland, passed away, Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Mt. Alverna Home. Mr. Evans was born June 30, 1925 in Cleveland and grew up on Treadway Ave, in the Old Brooklyn Neighborhood, attending Benjamin Franklin School. It was there that he first met Louise M. Witthuhn, whom he would eventually marry.
Mr. Evans was a 1943 Graduate of James Ford Rhodes High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp, serving as a B-17 Radio Operator in the Pacific Theatre. On fears that the war would continue, he married Louise M. Witthuhn on March 27, 1945 in Mountain Home, Idaho; where Mr. Evans was stationed for flight training. He was discharged from the service in March of 1946.
After the service Mr. Evans worked for Harshaw Chemical Company, Cleveland for 43 years, retiring as a supervisor in the early 1980s. During retirement he worked for Coyne-Kangesser Parking Garages as a manager, a job he truly enjoyed and worked until just a few years ago.
He was a life long member of the Pearl Road United Methodist Church, where he was baptized as an infant. He served in various capacities through the years and for 70 years sang in the church choir. In addition to an active church life Mr. Evans served on the Auxiliary Board of the Berea Children’s Home, where he enjoyed cooking for annual fundraiser dinners. He was the chairperson of the James Ford Rhodes High School Alumni Reunion Committee and a charter member with his wife of the Old Brooklyn Historical Society, as Membership Chair. While his son’s were in Indian Guides he was a tribe leader.
He was a skilled woodworker, who enjoyed travel, boating and camping. In addition Mr. Evans worked crossword puzzles and like playing word games. He loved to sing and was described as an honest, trustworthy and patient individual, with a great sense of humor, who was devoted to the welfare of his family.
Mr. Evans is the beloved husband of Louise M. (nee Witthuhn); loving father of Elaine Byrd (Richard), Donald (Linda) and Rick (Jean); devoted grandfather of Don, Christopher, David, Jason, Amy, Matthew, Katharine, and Taylor and great-grandfather of Ethan, Shayna, Kayla, and Rylee; dear brother of Beatrice Rubeck and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Preceded by parents David and Bessie (nee Wiltshire) and sisters Doris Evans and Dorothy Swaffield.
Memorial Service will be held at the Pearl Road United Methodist Church Saturday, January 23 at 12:30pm. Private interment Brooklyn Heights Cemetery.
