Vernon, VT – Reta Zoe Avery passed away peacefully on January 21, 2012 at the Vernon Green Nursing Home in Vernon at the age of 90 as a result of complications from a stroke. One of sixteen children born to Robert T. and Bessie (Smith) Rogers, she was born in Royalton, VT on October 28, 1921. On September 30, 1940, she married her high school sweetheart Albert D. Avery. Albert passed away on August 22, 1996. Surviving are her devoted children, Albert "Carroll" Avery of Williamstown, VT and Gary Avery and wife Hazel Hunter of West Chesterfield, NH; five grandchildren, Andy Avery and wife Rita, Michael Avery, Carrie Banford and husband Shane, Kimberly Fontaine and husband Sam and Wanda Bennett and husband Braden; 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Rose Willey of West Rutland, VT and Lucille Howard of Ravenna, OH and one brother, Duane Rogers and wife Florence of Randolph Center, VT. She enjoyed talking and joking around with her sons, Gary and Carroll, and their good friend Bill Albers. She always enjoyed the dark chocolate gifts that Bill gave to her. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Sue Avery of Barre, VT; daughters-in-law Diane (Rabideau) Avery and Evelyn (Manning) Avery; brothers, Chester, Clifford, Donald, Harold, Lawrence, Richmond, Robert A., William and Woodrow Rogers and sisters, Gladys Cushing, Loretta Bradley and Nina Desilets. Reta loved her family and enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas. Her children and grandchildren always found lots of presents under the Christmas tree. She was a wonderful cook and made the best rolls that any of us have eaten. Reta spent a great deal of time attending to her beautiful flower gardens, watching the humming birds & butterflies and enjoying the fresh air. Reta liked shopping trips with her granddaughters, Carrie and Kim. She also enjoyed playing tick tac toe and watching TV with her great grandson Sammy Fontaine. As a result of enjoying learning and advancing her knowledge, Reta excelled at schools in Randolph and advanced (skipped) one grade in grade school. She loved math. So, it was natural that she became an accountant/bookkeeper. The local employers that she worked for from the 1960's until her retirement included Rogers Construction Company, Cersosimo Lumber Company and Tarmy Lumber Company. Reta was loved very much by her family and friends. Although she will be sorely missed, we will always have her in our thoughts and prayers. We will all be together again sometime in the future. For now, we know that there is another angel watching over all of us. Funeral Services will be conducted at Asbury United Methodist Church, Route 63 in Chesterfield Center, NH on Saturday at 10:30 A.M. with Rev. Scott Masters, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Parish Cemetery in Brattleboro. There are no calling hours at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Reta's name may be made to Vernon Green Nursing Home, 61 Greenway Drive, Vernon, VT 05354 or to Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 593, Brattleboro, VT 05301.
