Richard A. McSpadden of Annandale, Virginia passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Virginia Hospital Center surrounded by his loving family. He will be missed by so many. Loving husband of Toni; devoted father of Ricky McSpadden, Jr. (Renee) Mobile, AL, Cheryl Adkins (Curt) Edinberg, VA, Vicki Waddle (Bobby) Manassas, VA, Frankie McSpadden Gainesville, VA, Janie Rutherford (Jeff) Aldie, VA, and Tommy McSpadden (Toni) Front Royal, VA. He is also survived by his brother William McSpadden; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four nieces and eight nephews. He is preceded in death by daughter, Ginny, son, Joey, and brother Joseph.

Born in New London, Connecticut on January 26, 1938 to the late LT. Joseph & Eva McSpadden. Following the family path of his father and brothers he chose to join the United States Navy. In 1956 Richard reported onboard the Submarine USS Trigger SS564 as an Electricians Mate. For the next 5 years, he participated in some very memorable operations including trips to and under the polar ice cap, North Atlantic and Northern European patrols to keep watch on the Kola Peninsula during the heat of our cold war with the Soviet Union. In later years, his devotion to his old submarine shipmates was very instrumental in helping to locate and contact long lost Trigger crew members and to conduct the first very successful Trigger Reunion in 2004 in Charleston, South Carolina. Most of these men had not seen each other for over 40 years and they will miss his presence at future gatherings tremendously. After his service as a submariner, he flourished in the crane and steel/precast erection business since the early 1960's. He remains an icon in the industry to this day.

His passions in life included hunting and tournament bill fishing in the Florida Keys. His true love was his wife Toni. Together they enjoyed spending much of their time at their beach house in Ocean City, Maryland with their children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Friends may call at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia on Monday, June 1, 2009 from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Virginia on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. Father Kevin Nadolski, OSFS, a dear friend of the family, will be celebrating.
