Mr. Richard C. "Dick" Sawtelle, a lifelong resident of Melrose, passed away at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading, on Monday, October 31, 2011, at age 74.
Richard was born on November 28, 1936 in Melrose, one of three sons of the late Joseph G. Sawtelle and Gladys V. (Cole) Sawtelle. A graduate of Melrose High School, Richard lived in the same home where he and his two brothers were raised on the Lynn Fells Parkway.
A well known and successful business man, Dick owned and managed the family real estate property, the Towers Plaza Shopping Center in Melrose. He and his late father also built summer camps on Cobbett's Pond in Windham, NH. Dick loved bird watching, nature, birdhouses, and spending summers on the Pond in Windham, NH.
He was an exceedingly generous man, offering help to the elderly and those less fortunate whenever he could. After watching the nurses care so deeply for his ill mother, Dick became a major supporter and benefactor of the VNA of Middlesex-East Hospice and the facility that bears his name, the Sawtelle Family Hospice House.
Dear brother of the late Joseph G. Sawtelle, Jr. and his wife Jean of New Castle, NH and the late Robert M. Sawtelle and his late wife Joan. Loving uncle of Cheryl Sawtelle Aguilar of Stuart, FL, Debra Sawtelle Brustas of Dracut, Linda Sawtelle Kossin of Melrose who was his caretaker for the last 13 years, Gayle Sawtelle Maskin of Princeton, NJ, Susan Sawtelle of Rye NH, Janis Sawtelle Hancock of Rye, NH, and Caryl Sawtelle of Rye, NH. Also survived by several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Dick's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, November 4 from 5-7 PM and again on Saturday morning where his Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
In Dick's memory and to honor his dedication to the organization, gifts may be made to the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, 320 Haverhill St., Reading, MA 01867.
