Richard D. Matthews, 71, of Matthews, died Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He was born August 4, 1937, the only son of the late Holland Q. and Ruth H. Matthews. He graduated with honors from East Mecklenburg High School in 1955 and from Charlotte College in 1958.

Mr. Matthews began his professional career marking the stock board for Goodbody and Company. At the time of his death, he was First Vice President of Investments for Wachovia Securities. He will be remembered for his kind, gracious manner and for his dedication to and compassion for his clients. His colleagues have repeatedly expressed that he always lived by the motto "others first" and that his shoes will never be filled.

In addition to being very passionate about his work, Mr. Matthews enjoyed his family and sports. He spent every Saturday morning with his grandson, Jonathan, who fondly referred to him as "Papa Ho Ho". He also coached girls' softball teams for many years and was an avid Duke basketball fan.

Mr. Matthews is survived by his two daughters Dawn M. Sherin and Lisa R. Matthews; four sisters, Betty Ruth Matthews, Faye M. Austin, Lynda M. Paxton, Ann M. Harrell;one grandson, Jonathan, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mr. Matthews will be held Tuesday, March 17th, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, 3316 Pleasant Plains Rd. Matthews, NC. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 18th, at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be immediately following the service in the church cemetery. Pallbearers for the services will be Steve Sherin, Ben Baker, Matt Austin, Garrett Davis, Lewis Ritter, and Charlie Connor. Honorary pallbearers are T. Walton Clapp, III, Leonard Safrip, William Mathis, David Wilson, Charles Scott, The Honorable James Martin, J. Leroy Rushing, Max Funderburk and Gale Gordon.

Mr. Matthews was a 32nd degree mason and was the financial advisor for the Masonic Home for Children. Memorials may be sent to the Masonic Home for Children
