Richard E. Amidon, 79, of Winchendon, formerly of Baldwinville, died early Thursday morning in Heywood Hospital, Gardner after a long illness. Richard was born in Templeton, June 13, 1933 a son of the late Edward and Eva (Hines) Amidon, and lived in Baldwinville for many years before moving to Winchendon 23 years ago. Richard's beloved wife of 54 years, Betty E. (Erickson) Amidon, died in 2008. Richard was a long time member of Memorial Congregational Church of Baldwinville. He was a founding member of the Snowbound Club in Winchendon and past president of the Mill Glen Campers Association. Richard proudly served his country during the Korean War with the United States Army. He was a former member of the Lt. Roger P. Warfield American Legion Post 373 and a current member of the Eugene M. Connor Post 193 American Legion of Winchendon. He recently received his 50 year pin from the American Legion. Richard loved sports. He enjoyed Nascar, watching the Red Sox and all the local teams. When he was in Florida Richard enjoyed shrimping. One of his most cherished memories was when he went shrimping with Dale Earnhardt Sr. Most of all Richard loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling with Betty and will always be remembered for his July 4th fireworks displays for his grandchildren. Those displays brought him great enjoyment. Richard will be sadly missed by 2 sons; Ron S. Amidon and his wife Rena of Templeton and Jim C. Amidon and his wife Rhea of Boynton Beach, FL, 3 daughters; Lori J. Huhtala and her husband Peter of Granite Bay, CA, Lynn H. Davis and her husband Gordon of Baldwinville, and Nancy J. Amidon of Gardner, 2 brothers; Ernest Amidon of Phillipston and Raymond Amidon of California, 13 grandchildren; Kyle, April and Chelsey Amidon, Nathan Gotantas, Angela Berkey, Matthew, Christopher, and Michael Sullivan, Samantha Huhtala, Rachel Davis, and Samuel and Julian Graves, 2 great-grandchildren; Maisy Grace Amidon, and MacKenzie Gotantas, and several nieces and nephews. Richard was predeceased by his granddaughter Alyssa Jean Amidon and his brother Edward Amidon. Relatives and friends are planning to honor and celebrate Richard's life by gathering for visiting hours in the Community Chapel of Lamoureux Fletcher and Smith Funeral Home, 105 Central St., Gardner on Sunday July22 2012 from 4-7PM. His funeral service with Military honors will be held privately for the the family.
