Brattleboro- Richard Eugene, "Dick" Barrett, 67, of Putney Road died Friday afternoon, May 11, 2012 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Jct. Mr. Barrett was born in Keene, N.H. on June 8, 1944 the son of Howard and Ella (Brown) Barrett. He was raised and educated in Winchester and was a graduate of Thayer High School. He went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army stationed in Vietnam for one year during the Vietnam Conflict and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and was designated as a sharpshooter. He was discharged from active service in October of 1971. Mr. Barrett had been employed at C.E. Bradley Labs in Brattleboro for many years retiring from Bradley's in 2009. Previously he had worked for Lawrence Leather in Winchester. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 serving on the house committee, active for many years in the color guard and joint memorial unit which performs military honors at funeral services. He also was very active with Post #1034's weekly BINGO program. Of his leisure time activities he enjoyed bowling and time shared with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was married to Irene Bukowski and later Lois Golec. Both marriages ended in divorce. Survivors include two daughters, Tanya Barrett of Hinsdale and Patty Ann Kirker of Florida, one step-son, Shawn Golec of Windham, Maine, one brother, Russell Barrett currently a resident at Harborside-Applewood Healthcare in Winchester. Additionally he leaves five grandchildren, Shantell, Austin, Lexie, Lattysha and Sarah and several nieces, nephews and his extended family and friends at Post #1034. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ubie, and Freddie Barrett. Graveside Committal services with full military honors will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. in Locust Ridge Cemetery on Black Mountain Road. A reception in his honor will follow the committal to be held at the V.F.W. across from the cemetery. There are no calling hours.
