Richard H. "Polly" Marmon, a resident of Los Chavez since 1984 was born in Albuquerque May 15, 1924, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2011. He was raised in Laguna, NM by his parents Henry C. and Lilly Ann. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Betty Jo; children, Polly Ann Canive and husband, Jose, Richard H. Marmon II and wife, Linda; James R. Marmon, and Marguerite Sweeney and husband, Edward; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lee Marmon of Laguna, NM and Kenneth Marmon of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, the mother of his children in 1973; and his second wife, Shirley in 1998. After he graduated from high school in 1942 he attended tech schools in New Mexico, Texas and completed his training at Philco Airborne Radio School in Philadelphia, PA, under the U.S. Signal Corps Reserve in 1943. Dick was called into service in 1943. He served in the U.S. Air Force 390th Bomb Groups, Squadron 570th, at Station 153 Parham, England. Flying over Germany he was wounded on his 15th mission and returned to the United States in January 1945. Mr. Marmon was awarded the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster and The Purple Heart. After the war, Dick attended the University in Albuquerque and worked for Sandia National Labs, retiring after 32 years in 1980. After traveling to many parts of the world including seeing the Great Wall of China, with Shirley they settled down in Los Chavez and did voluntary work for the Talking Book Library for the Blind and Handicapped for 22 years by repairing the tape machines and head sets. He was a life member of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society in Pooler, GA, a life member of the 390th Foundation of the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ, and a life member of the New Mexico Chapter of the 8th Air Force in Albuquerque. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held, Friday, January 6th at 10:30 am at French - University Chapel. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Animal Humane Association of New Mexico, 615 Virginia St. SE, Albuquerque 87108.
