Richard L. "Rick" Earl, Jr. age 52 of Huntsville, Alabama and a former resident of Constantine and Three Rivers went to be with his Lord and Savior early Saturday morning December 8, 2012 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born January 13, 1960 in Three Rivers, Michigan a son of Richard L. and Nancy (Baker) Earl, Sr. Rick attended elementary and middle school in Constantine, Michigan. In 1975 he moved to Waterford, Michigan where he graduated from Waterford Mott High School with the class of 1978. Following graduation he continued his education at Glen Oaks Community College for one year. In the fall of 1979 he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in 1980. Rick received extensive schooling in electronics at Lawry Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado. After his schooling he was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington and served one year in Seoul Korea. He continued his military career at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama until his honorable discharge in 1989 at which time he applied for a civil service position to the federal government as an I.F.T.E., electronic specialist. On June 21, 1980 he married Dawn Marie Brown in Denver, Colorado. She died May 3, 2009. Rick attended the Harvest Baptist Church in Harvest, Alabama and had made his home in Huntsville for over 26 years. He was actively involved with Amateur Radio (Ham) for his entire working career. He participated in various activities for the Huntsville Amateur Radio Club including weather programming from the local TV station, taught classes at the local tech college, plus did testing for people interested in getting their Amateur Radio Licenses, during which he received numerous awards. He is survived by his father: Richard L. Earl, Sr. of Sturgis, Michigan; mother: Nancy Johansen of Goshen, Indiana; sister: Kathy (Gary) Roth of Shipshewana, Indiana; brother: Trenton (Shelly) Leach of Nolensville, Tennessee; nephews: Sullivan Leach and Harrison Leach and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife and step-mother: Cindy K. Earl. The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Rick Earl will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Deb Johnson will officiate. Entombment will follow the service at the Sturgis Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
