RICHARD LEE DICK SCHWARTZ, age 71 years, a well known businessman and resident of Deerfield Village at Canaan Valley, departed this life early Tuesday morning, February 6, 2007 at the home of his daughter, Sarah. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born Friday, December 20, 1935 at Parkersburg, WV., a son of the late Lewis Schwartz and Violet Wells Schwartz. On April 14, 1957 at Philippi, WV., he was married to the former Patricia A. Bell, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter; Sarah B. Schwartz of Thomas, two brothers; David Schwartz of Fairmont and Don Schwartz of Laurel, Miss., two sisters; Charlotte Dadisman of Fairmont and Nancy Jo Woodford of Richmond, Va., one grandson; Richard Colby McKinnie of Pittsburgh, Pa., and a special niece; Phoebe Mollard of Canaan Valley.
Dick was a graduate of Philippi High School with the class of 1953, a graduate of Fairmont State College with the class of 1959 and did his postgraduate studies at West Virginia University. He was a veteran of the United States Marines. He was former owner and operator of the Fairmont Printing Company of Fairmont, WV., for eighteen years. Mr. Schwartz was proud of the fact that his company produced the magazine, Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. He was very active in community service, having served as President of the Jaycees, the Rotary, the Marion County Chamber of Commerce and Tucker County Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, the Alumni Association of Fairmont State College. He was Police Commissioner and Governor of the State District 7530 of Rotary. He served as a representative in Tucker and Preston Counties in the West Virginia State Legislature. In 1981 he retired and moved to Canaan Valley where he purchased what is now known as the Village Inn Motel, Big Johns Restaurant and the Canaan Valley Store. In 1998, he transferred his shares of stock in the store and restaurant and began his career in golfing. His grandson Colby accompanied him on many outings. His golfing friends each Tuesday were, Dewey Rice, Richard Wolfe and Jug Ratcliffe. He played golf until the fall of 2006. He was an avid fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers and a member of the Canaan Valley Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 7 to 9 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 1:30PM. The Reverend Mark Joseph will officiate and interment will follow at the Davis Cemetery at Davis. The family suggest that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Canaan Valley Baptist Church; PO Box 308, Davis, WV. 26260, or Mountain Hospice, 1600 Crim Avenue, Belington, WV. 26250. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for RICHARD LEE DICK SCHWARTZ.
