Richard Lee Smith, 78, of Wabash, Indiana, died at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at his home. He was born June 19, 1931 in Hymera, Indiana to Leroy and Therese (Evans) Smith. He married Oga Lee Carpenter in Urbana, Indiana, in December of 1953; she died November 20, 1999. He retired from Wabash Alloys in 1973 and was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean conflict. Richard was a member of the Lagro American Legion. He loved NASCAR racing, hunting, fishing, music, and his family. He is survived by his son, Richard A. Smith of Wabash; two daughters, Lou Ann (Rick) Strange and Dawn Lee Stevens, both of Wabash; three sisters, Betty (Tom) Schaffer of Georgia, Rose Wheeler of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Carolyn Mellinger of Indianapolis, Indiana; two brothers, Joe (Janice) Smith of Hymera and Mike (Bonnie) Smith of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, and a great granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
