Richard Ralph Gates, 65, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away December 18, 2011, in his home. Originally from Staten Island, New York, he is the son of the late Robert and Nettie Gates. He retired after 30 years of military service, first in the Marine Corps Infantry and then as a Navy Chaplain. He recently retired as Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Chesapeake, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Donna Montgomery Gates; and his daughter, Emerson Brooks Gates of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by two brothers, Russell Gates and Robert Gates; a niece, Lexi Gates; and two nephews, Russ Gates and Rick Gates. A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 521 Providence Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23325 on Thursday, December 29, 2011, at 11 a.m. Pastor Harry W. Griffith will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
