Richard (Dick) Eugene Shaw passed away on December 15, 2010 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born in Salt Lake on August 28, 1927 to Lillian Hortense and Benjamin Edward Shaw. He married Eleanor Folland on August 20, 1953 who passed away on April 12, 1960. He married Lou Jean Cayton deJong on June 12, 1961.

His wife and family were the most important part of his life and he was an extremely loving father and grandfather and was loved dearly in return. Lou Jean and Dick were married for 49 ½ years and raised a “yours, mine and ours” family of seven children. He is survived by all his children, Stanley deJong (Bonnie), Janell Smith (Jody), Gary Shaw (Denise), Andy deJong (Debbie), Sherry Majors (Bazil), Suzanne Boyer (Rock), and Richard Shaw Jr. (Kris), 25 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.

Dick was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many callings throughout his life. He served 2 LDS missions: the first was to the Holland mission for 2 ½ years and then later with Lou Jean in 1998 to the Nauvoo, IL mission. He also served as a temple worker for 3 years at the Jordan River Temple and 3 years at the Salt Lake Temple but had to leave his temple work due to his cancer diagnosis. He graduated from the Art Barn with a three year in Commercial Art and also served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1948.

Dick had an immense love of music and sang in many quartets and choirs in his life. He especially loved participating with The Swanee Singers, where he served as President for several years.

Dick was an extremely hard worker and spent most of his life working for Moore Radio Supply, as a partner in the Morrison Meat Pie company, and then in quality control at A and R Meats.

Dick developed land in Fish Haven, ID (Bear Lake) so the family could be together and enjoy life. The cabin is known as the “Shaw’s Gathering Place” and everyone who gathers there are welcomed and loved. Many of the kids have cabins on the land their parents purchased. The six acres have brought much joy and togetherness to the family and, for many family members, it is their favorite place to be.

Dick loved to travel and went on many memorable trips with family and friends, including Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii and several places in the United States. One of his favorite vacation spots, when the kids were younger, was camping and boating at Jackson Lake in the Tetons and Lake Powell. Later in life, he enjoyed many trips to Mexico with his dear neighborhood friends, the “Wrinklies.” He also loved to stay for extended periods with his friend and cousin, Dave Cayton in Salinas, CA and returned to Nauvoo many times with Lou, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Dick and Lou have many great friends and love to get together with all of them. They have great memories of good food, games and fun! Dick was a man of great character and was known for his love of everyone, his humor and his positive attitude toward life. Dick was valiant in his fight against cancer for the past 5 years. He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by all.
