Richard T. Whelan, 72, of Chepachet, died Saturday, July 24, 2010. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late John F. and Evelyn F. Whelan. Mr. Whelan was a District Sales Manager for the Van Munching Co. for 10 years and worked at Zambarano Hospital for 6 years before retiring. He was a 1960 graduate of Providence College and was the first high school basketball player Coach Joe Mullaney ever recruited for PC. He won a starting position on coach Mullaney’s first two N.I.T. teams in 1959 and 1960. Before joining the Friar staff as an assistant coach and scout in 1967, he also served as an assistant coach at Brown University. He is survived by his two daughters, Kelly A. Marshall and Mary J. Nascimento both of East Prov.; his companion Michelle Martin of Chepachet and his sister Sally Schwebach of Salem, OH; his grandchildren, Sean, Michael and Taylor Marshall, Bret and Ben Nascimento and his great granddaughter Kennedy Marshall.


Visitation will be held Wednesday in the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave. (Rte.44) Greenville from 5-7pm, with a funeral service following at 7pm. Burial will be private in the RI Veteran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be appreciated.
