Rick Lee Butzlaff, 59, of Hot Springs and Benton, passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2011 in Hot Springs. Born February 19, 1952 in Madison, Wisconsin, he was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Tonna Butzlaff of Hot Springs and Benton; son, Ryan Butzlaff of Lowell, Arkansas; parents, Harry and Shirley Butzlaff of Bryant; three sisters, Sandra Phillips of Arlington, Texas, Nancy Blaylock of Missouri City, Texas and Shari Butzlaff of Little Rock; three brothers, Robert Butzlaff of Arlington, Texas, William Butzlaff of Russellville and Jim Butzlaff of Bryant.

Memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at Gross Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain David Kenser officiating.

Memorials may be made to Safe Haven Shelter for Women and Children, 432 Ouachita Avenue, Suite A, Hot Springs, AR 71901

In my shock of hearing of Ricks passing I spelled you name wrong before. Dean has such great memories of Rick and their working relation and friendship. I also have great memories of Rick. He was always so nice and friendly to everyone. We will keep you and Ryan in our thoughts and prayers.

Tonna & Ryan~ I was so sorry to hear of Rick's passing. I have fond memories of our childhood... Christmas family gatherings at Mom's (Aunt Marilyn)as well as family birthday celebrations. One of my favorite memories would be that anytime I answered the telephone, I would hear "Is this the Moose residence?"
I always knew that it was my Uncle Rick joking around on the other line and it always put a smile on my face.

As kids, Rick came up with this name of "Moose" that he called me. I don'y know where he got it from, but I DID NOT like it! He would call me Moose and run off with me behind him. He was faster than me so it often took a while to catch him- but when I did catch him and pin him to the ground, he would quickly recant. But when I let him up, he would grin , call me Moose and run off again. This was not a singular occurence! Many years later, I got a gift from Rick - a small box. Inside was a small goofy looking figurine of a moose. We smiled at each other. The moose has been on my mantle ever since.

This is one of many stories that happened in Cloverdale on Verbena Drive. Back in the early 70's, friends and family knew Rick liked to lay out in the back yard to tan. He always wore his favorite purple gym shorts. I think he wore those shorts everyday. One bright and sunny day, I decided to give Rick a little bath. So I found a bucket and filled it with water. I climbed out my bedroom window and positioned myself on the roof. Mom and a few others where watching out the dining room window. About the time the water left the bucket, Rick opened his eyes and "splash". I believe about half of him got wet. As I remember, I spent the next couple of hours in my bedroom with the door locked until Rick cooled off.

Back in 1973, Rick wanted to move out of his parents house and share an apartment together. We found a two bedroom apartment at Heritage House Apartments off Reservior Road. After about two months, Rick walked in with a paper sack in his hand and said "Happy Birthday". I got you something you could really use. When I looked in the sack there was a pack of cigarettes, a quart of beer, and a playboy magazine. That was one of the best gifts I ever received.
A few months later we both moved to Willow Creek Apartments where Rick would meet his future wife and soulmate "Tonna".
