Former president of Valparaiso University

VALPARAISO, Ind. - Robert Schnabel, the former president of Valparaiso University, died Tuesday. He was 86.

He died in Angola, where he had lived in recent years, said the university.

Schnabel led the private Lutheran school from 1978 to 1988. He came to the school after a tenure as president of Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y., and as a philosophy professor at Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne.

His tenure at Valparaiso included the construction of three major campus buildings - the Athletics-Recreation Center, the School of Law and the communications and computer facility that bears his name.
