Robert A. Lucas, 91, a resident of Heath Village Retirement Community, Hackettstown, NJ, passed away August 30 after a short illness at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center He was a graduate of the University of West Virginia, his native state, and earned his PhD in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. He served his country in the United States Navy in World War II from 1944 to 1946. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa. His 34-year working career was as a research organic chemist for CIBA-GEIGY pharmaceuticals (now Novartis) in Summit, NJ. Bob and Constance (Sharpe) Lucas were married in 1948 and lived in Mendham, NJ for 54 years. In addition to wife Constance, Bob is survived by daughter Constance S. Halliwell (husband Thomas) of Netcong, NJ; son Robert A. Lucas, Jr. (wife Diane) of Huntsville, AL; son Christopher S. Lucas of Melrose, MA; grandson Matthew Lucas of Huntsville, AL; and granddaughter Carolyn Fair (husband Drew) of Birmingham, AL. Bob's chief passion was growing orchids in the greenhouse he built himself. He was a former President of the North Jersey Orchid Society. He was an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Morristown, NJ, serving in many capacities and donating countless hours. In 2004, he was the parish recipient of the 2004 David P. Hegg II Lifetime Achievement Award. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church (mailing address: 70 Maple Ave., Morristown, NJ 07960).
