Brattleboro- Robert Arthur, "Bob" Torrey, 58, of Parkside Avenue, died late Friday night, December 9, 2011 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts following an eleven week hospitalization. The cause of death was complications from pancreatitis. A lifelong resident of Brattleboro he was born on February 8, 1953 the son of Arthur and Constance (Duncan) Torrey. He was raised and educated in Brattleboro graduating from Brattleboro Union High School with the Class of 1971. While at BUHS he excelled in the Business Education Curriculum and was recommended by then department head Gordon Thomas for a position at Brattleboro Savings and Loan Association then located on Elliot Street, a position he secured two months after graduating. What initially was an entry level position turned into a successful 40 year career with the financial institution. Starting out in a teller's position Bob worked his way up to Bank Vice President. He was well known at the Savings and Loan for his thoroughness and patience, often assisting the elderly with the menial task of helping to balance a checkbook. Because of his dedicated involvement with the Savings and Loan, Bob was often considered the George Bailey of Brattleboro from the much loved 1946 movie classic "It's A Wonderful Life," by Frank Capra. Active civically, he was a former board member of the AID'S Project of Southern Vermont, and held membership in the Scottish Clan Donnachaidh where he served as the Vermont representative. He was very proud of his Scottish family heritage. Steadfast in his lifelong walk of faith, he was an active member of Saint Michael's Episcopal Church where he served on the church vestry, was an altar server, headcounter and co-chaired the parish's welcoming team. Bob often filled the position as tech support for the church. A quiet, unassuming man, he was known for his spirit of friendship and kindness and loved to work behind the scenes in whatever project he was involved in. Of his leisure time activities, he was an avid reader, enjoyed genealogy and loved birds and small animals, especially the squirrels that visited his feeders at his home on Parkside Avenue. He also loved to travel and go antiquing. Bob also was a Dark Shadows, Doctor Who and Star Wars fan. Survivors include his father of Brattleboro, one brother, William Torrey of Brattleboro and his two children, Liam and Hope Emila both of Mount Desert, Maine, his close personal friend of many years, Sarah Benton of Brattleboro, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
