Robert Balkunas, age 75, of Taylor, passed away Tuesday in Community Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit. He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Rosemary Cameli. Wed on April 7, 1958, the couple were married for 53 years. Born in Pittston on January 24, 1936, son of the late Anthony and Frances Krasinsky Balkunas, Robert was a graduate of Pittston Area High School, Class of 1954. A proud veteran, he served in the United States Army. Prior to his retirement, he had worked in restaurant sales and distribution. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a member of St. Ann's Basilica in West Scranton. An avid sports fan, he loved Penn State Nittany Lions football. He was also a very talented woodworking craftsman. A member of the Riverside Vikings Booster Club, he formerly held office as president. Remembered by his family as strong-willed, he raised them with a football background. Much loved, he will be dearly missed. Surviving are his children, sons, Robert Balkunas, Jr., and wife Victoria of Boca Raton, Florida, Kenneth Balkunas and wife Heather of Memphis, Tennessee, and Michael Balkunas of Delray Beach, Florida, daughters, Theresa Balkunas of Taylor, Lisa Kelly and husband Greg of Savannah, Georgia, and Claudine Russo and husband Michael of Dalton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His family would like to thank both Dr. William J. Dempsey and the staff of CMC's ICU Unit. A private Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by Rev. Joseph Jones will be conducted on Friday in St. Ann's Basilica. Military rites, AMVETS Honor Guard. Interment, St. Rocco's Parish Cemetery in Pittston, on December 27th at 11AM to be conducted by Rev. Francis Landry, C.P. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to St. Ann's Monastery (1250 St. Ann's St., Scranton, 18504). Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
