Robert Lee Fehler of Hot Springs, a much-loved Marine veteran who fought in WWII, passed away February 7, 2012 at The Pines Nursing and Rehab. He was born May 16, 1926 to Herman and Matilda (McKinney) Fehler. He was predeceased by his parents and his daughter, Catherine. He is survived by his wife of 32 years Ellen (Fendley) Fehler; his son Robin Lee Fehler; sister Barbara Cecil; brother Herman Fehler; nieces, nephews and extended family; and a myriad of friends associated with horse racing across the country.
Bob fought in the Pacific battle grounds of Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. He was proud to say he was on the island at the famous flag raising on Mt. Suribachi. He was associated with Oaklawn Jockey Club since 1959.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Gross Funeral Home and a memorial service will be planned for a later date. The family would like to thank The Pines caregivers and Dierksen's Hospice Care.
Bob's favorite charities include the Humane Society, DAV, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and PVA.
Memorial services will be held at Oaklawn Jockey Club Chapel on Monday March 12, 2012 at 6 p.m. with Chaplin Rich Heffington officiating.
