Robert "Bob" Neil Wonderlich, 77, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born December 19, 1934, at Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Dr. John Delmer and Madelyn Dawson Wonderlich. He graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1953. He attended William Penn College and played football. In 1956, he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon his discharge he returned to Oskaloosa. Bob and Ray Cunningham were partners in R&R Excavating for a time. On December 9, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carol Ann Davis at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. Bob worked for the City of Oskaloosa for a short time as an assistant to the city engineer. He later went to work as an auditor for Job Services of Iowa; he retired from there in October of 1993. In retirement he enjoyed winters in Weslaco, Texas with Carol. He also enjoyed summer fishing trips to Canada with his family. He enjoyed playing golf, playing Bridge, pheasant hunting, and mushroom hunting. He was a very successful deer hunter. In one of the few times he went, he harvested a Boone and Crockett Buck that scored over 244. That deer was featured in Bass Pro Shops "King of Bucks" 2010-2011 calendar; known as "The Wonderbuck" for the month of August. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, the Elks Lodge, and the Jaycees. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans where he served two times as State Commander and several times as Local Commander. He was a charter member and was currently serving as president of the Computer Club at County Sunshine Park in Wesleco, Texas.
His family includes his wife, Carol Wonderlich of Oskaloosa; a son and his wife, Mike and Samantha Wonderlich of Oskaloosa; and their children, Griffin, Cannon, and Asher; a daughter and her husband: Linda and John Dougan of Newton; and their children, Lindsey, Grant, Liam; and a brother: Dr. John Wonderlich of rural New Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Graveside Military Rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation will begin Sunday after 12:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel from 2 – 4 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the Leroy Bone Scholarship Fund of the D.A.V.
