Robert "Bob the Duke" Hopes

Dear Ellie,

I don't think there is enough space to share all of the memories I have about Bob. Growing up he was one always yelling at us kids to slow down on the motorcycles, and then in our cars once we knew how to drive. All of us kids were a little afraid of him growing up, but then we grew up and realized what a great friend he could be! He was just a big ol' teddy bear.

Dear Ellie,

I don't think there is enough space to share all of the memories I have about Bob. Growing up he was one always yelling at us kids to slow down on the motorcycles, and then in our cars once we knew how to drive. All of us kids were a little afraid of him growing up, but then we grew up and realized what a great friend he could be! He was just a big ol' teddy bear.

When I learned to drive, he would always lend a hand to my dad when we needed help working on the old blue ford. When I got the "rice burner" he would lend us your garage, and then his shop whenever it needed work, which was all of the time! I remember when he was building the shop, I came over and asked him, "will my toyota have a space?" And he said, "Why do you think I'm making it so big..." LOL

When we needed the trees removed, or the water line replaced, or the snow removed, he was there with the backhoe. He taught me how to texture the ceiling in my mom's house. His garden brought us the biggest squash I've ever seen, along with the best tomatoes and melons. Whenever I needed a tool my dad didn't have, all I would have to do is ask and he would have it and let me borrow it. There was never a time that he said, "no."

When my dad was sick Bob was there for him as a friend and drinking buddy. Bob was a great friend to my dad for 35 years, and I'm sure my dad welcomed him over with a fishing pole in one hand and a Bud in the other. And since my dad's been gone, I always knew I could count on Bob to watch the house and keep an eye on my mom when I was away.

Whenever anything happened on the street, we always knew that we could count on Bob to know what was going on. Some people may call that a "nosey neighbor" I call that a GREAT neighbor.

For the last 42 years, you and Bob have been the best neighbors to us. I know I can speak for just about everyone on the street, that this neighborhood will not be the same without Bob.

Ellie, you are always welcome to come over for any reason. We love you like family. Our hearts go out to you right now, and whatever we can do to help, we will. You can come over, have a cocktail, tell stories, laugh, cry, at any time.

Ellie, you and Bob hold a great spot in my mind and heart. You were very considerate to us while we rented your basement from you. It was nice to get to know you both and share, as well as, create some memories together. Bob was always a character and I will always remember that. I wish you the best during this time of mourning and hope you will reach out to me if you are in need of anything. 801-499-9409.
