Robert Edmund "Squire" Powelson, 84, of Weirton, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2011 in the Life Line Hospital, Wintersville, OH. Born August 26, 1926 in Midway, PA, he was a son of the late George and Emma Bish Powelson. He was also preceded in death by his wife Norma Mae Cole Powelson on July 4, 2003 and whom he married June 19, 1948, brothers Albert Powelson and Walter L. Powelson, sisters Mary Catherine Gilles, Ida Mae Cool, Nina Martin and Laura Belle Orrick, half-brothers Brady W. Powelson, Lewis C. Powelson and George W. Powelson and half-sisters Leona Powelson and Rosalie Powelson. In 1983, with 34 years of service, he retired from National Steel where he worked as a master burner in the car repair shop. He was a member of the Cove Presbyterian Church, WSX 25-Year Club and VFW 2716. He served in World War II from 1944-1946 where he served in the Internal Security Detachment as a Special Guard for the Nuremberg Prison, where he guarded the criminals for the Nuremberg Trials in Germany. He also marched in the funeral of General George Patton. Mr. Powelson is survived by his son Bruce Powelson and his wife Patti; daughters Susan Mazzocco and her husband Warren and Pamela Jones and her husband Pete; grandchildren Schelley Moss, Trishann (Joe) Sacripanti, Thomas (Teresa) Jones; great grandchildren Rocco and Sophia Sacripanti; sister Ethel Onstott of Columbus, OH and ten nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where funeral services will be celebrated 11AM Saturday. Interment will be in the Highland Hills Memorial Gardens, Follansbee, WV where Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion Firing Squad. Memorial contributions may be made to the Weirton Salvation Army, P. O. Box 2499, Weirton, WV 26062.
