Mr. Robert Eugene Cooper, 74, of 241 East Grant Street, Greencastle, PA entered into eternal rest at 12:31 A.M. Saturday, December 31, 2011 in Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown, MD. He was born on October 2, 1937 in Greencastle, PA; he was the son of the late Wilmer Lee and Gladys Irene (Bivens) Cooper. He was a lifelong resident of the Greencastle area. Mr. Cooper graduated from the Greencastle Senior High School with the class of 1956. He then served in the United States Navy from 1956 through 1958. He and his wife of over 53 years, Mrs. Connie L. (Burns) Cooper was married on September 13, 1958 in the Greencastle Church of the Brethren. They moved to the present residence in 1965. In his early working career, he worked at Grove Worldwide in Shady Grove and then Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. Mr. Cooper retired from Mack Truck Manufacturing in Hagerstown after 331/2 years of service with the company. He was mostly in the assembly portion of the company. Following his retirement, he worked part-time at Greencastle Greens Golf Course for 12 years. Mr. Cooper was a member and past Worship Master of General James Chambers Lodge #801 Free and Accepted Masons of Chambersburg. He was master in 1987. He also was a life member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Rescue Hose Company of Greencastle; member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 of Greencastle; Harry D. Ziegler V.F.W. Post 6319, Greencastle, Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association since 1965; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rites Consistory, Valley of Harrisburg; life member of National Rifle Association and a member of the national AARP. Mr. Cooper was very instrumental in starting the Greencastle Quarterback Club and the New Girls Softball League of Greencastle, and he coached the Little League Cubs from 1966 through 1978. Mr. Cooper enjoyed going to the beach, traveling, reading and playing golf. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael E. Cooper wife Kelly (Fisher), Lee E. Cooper wife Lori (Reecher) both of Greencastle; one granddaughter, Cherie N. Nichols, two step grandchildren, Sarah Hubbard and Kayla Nunemaker. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 5, 2012 in Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington Street, Greencastle with Pastor Gerald L. Snyder officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday in the funeral home, with Masonic memorial services at 7:30 P.M.
