Robert Frederick Garnett, Sr.
Robert Frederick Garnett, Sr., 76, died at home on Hilton Head Island, SC on May 13, 2010 after an extended illness.
Robert was born on October 23, 1933 to James R. Garnett and Mary Lucy Raley Garnett. He graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville, IN in 1951. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Evansville in 1956. Robert served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, including active duty as a First Lieutenant in Japan and the Philippines in 1956 – 58. His first teaching position was in the social studies department at North High School in Evansville. In 1962, Robert joined the University of Evansville faculty after earning his M.S. from Purdue University. He later returned to Purdue and in 1966 earned a Ph.D. in counselor education. During his 28 year career at UE, he served as Professor and Dean of the School of Education, Vice President for Planning, Vice President for Finance and Administration, and Executive Vice President and COO. Upon retirement from UE in 1990, he was named Professor of Education Emeritus.
Robert started another career with Witt, Fiala, Flannery and Associates, a national facilitates management firm, as regional vice president from 1990 – 96. He and his wife Dianne moved to Hilton Head Island, SC in 1992. Robert was active in the Hilton Head Plantation Property Owners Association, serving on the Board of Directors from 1997 – 2000 and as president in 1999 – 2000.
Robert is survived by his wife of 33 years Dianne; his children, Robert Garnett, Jr. of Ft. Worth, TX, Jane Garnett of Corning, NY, and Anne Marie Howton of Garland, TX; grandsons, Benjamin Garnett and Gabriel Garnett; and his brother Joe Floyd and sister Shirley Hunt.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Robert F. Garnett, Sr. Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, Post Office Box 23019, Hilton Head Island, SC 29925.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew By-the-Sea United Methodist Church on Hilton Head Island.
