COLUMBIA - Father Robert H. Fix, a retired priest of the Diocese of Charleston, died February 6, 2012. He was 85.
A vigil service will be held Friday, February 10, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone will be Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 10:30 a.m., both in Our Lady of the Hills Church, 120 Marydale Lane, in Columbia. The burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Red Bank, N.J. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting.
Father Fix was born June 7, 1926, in Red Bank, N.J., to the late Joseph E. and Helen Grause Fix. He was a graduate of Red Bank High School; St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., with a Master of Theology; and St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn. He attended Crosier House of Studies in Fort Wayne, Ind., and Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minn. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944-1946.
He was ordained into the priesthood on June 7, 1953, by Bishop Louis B. Kucerce for the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross, known as the Crosiers. He was incardinated in the Diocese of Charleston on April 7, 1977.
Father Fix held assignments as an associate priest beginning in 1973 at St. Thomas the Apostle in North Charleston, Church of the Nativity in Charleston, St. John in North Charleston and St. Joseph in Columbia. He was pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Mauldin, Immaculate Conception in Goose Creek, St. John Neumann in Columbia, Our Lady of Lourdes in Greenwood, and Our Lady of the Hills in Columbia, from which he retired in 2001.
Aside from pastor duties, he also served on the faculty at Bishop England High School, was a diocesan Catholic Youth Organization director, an instructor in the permanent diaconate program, and a faculty member at Wawasee Preparation School and Crosier House of Studies. He worked as editor of Today's Family, a Crosier publication, and was on the editorial staff of Our Sunday Visitor.
Father Fix was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jean Pereless; and brothers, Gen. Joseph Fix III, James W. Fix and John R. Fix. Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
