Robert J. Zacharias, age 80, of North Ridgeville, passed away Tuesday, May 16 at EMH Regional Medical Center following a long illness.
He was a life long resident of North Ridgeville.
He graduated from St. Peter School and North Ridgeville High School.
Mr. Zacharias was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a Staff Sergeant from August 1943 to November 1945. He received the Air Crew Member Wings, Air Medal with one bronze cluster, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one silver star and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a life and charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9871, North Ridgeville, where he held the position of adjutant for several years and also served with the Color Guard faithfully.
He work as a manufacturing engineer from 1958 until retiring in 1996 at the Elyria Manufacturing Corporation. He previously worked at Couche-Uthe Manufacturing in Elyria and Ace Manufacturing in Cleveland.
He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, North Ridgeville where he was an active member of the St. Peter Holy Name Society and was awarded the "Man of The Year" and Certificate of Achievement by the Holy Name Society in April 2005 in recognition of being in the society for the last 50 years. He was well known for his Holy Name ticket sales. He was also a member of the Elyria Polish Club.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary C. Zacharias (nee Holtwick); sons, John of Westminster, Ohio, Kenneth of Windsor, Connecticut, Paul of North Ridgeville, Stephen of Gardiner, Montana; daughters, Mary Vittori of Elyria, Julie Venglarcik of Tucson, Arizona; ten grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and sister Gertrude Short of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Josephine Zacharias; brothers Erwin, Edward and Raymond; sisters, Eleanor Zacharias, Ruth McLaughlin; and twin grandsons who died at birth Noah and Joshua Venglarcik.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-5PM at the David Bogner Family Funeral Home, 36625 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville where the North Ridgeville VFW Post 9871 Honor Guard will stand guard from 2:30-4:00PM. A prayer service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 9:30AM followed by a 10:00AM Mass at St. Peter Catholic Church, 35777 Center Ridge Road, North Ridgeville. Rev. Stephen Kaminski, Pastor, will be the celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery where VFW Post 9871 will conduct full military honors.
