Robert "Big Bob" Allen Johnson, 71, departed this life on the evening of June 22, 2012 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL after a twelve-year battle with colon cancer. Born March 13, 1941 in Lynchburg, VA to Randolph C. Johnson and Frances E. Ferguson Johnson, Bob was the fourth of four children. Bob graduated from Campbell County High School in 1960. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and was stationed in England. He later earned a B.S. in Business from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA.
Bob worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. He also was the data processing manger for Lester Woody Accounting firm in Chicago, IL. In retirement, Bob loved traveling with his wife (and children occasionally), researching family history and golfing. He greatly enjoyed attending Campbell County High School reunions and reconnecting with classmates.
A religious man, Bob was confirmed at the age of 13 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, VA where he also served as an altar boy. In later years, he worshiped and enjoyed fellowship at both the Messiah – St. Bartholomew and Trinity Episcopal Churches in Chicago, IL.
Bob leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 34 years, Patricia Green Johnson, five children: Cheryl Renee Johnson, Rodman Johnson, Freya Johnson, Rachel Johnson and Robert Johnson and a special nephew, Teacher "Tracy" Johnson. In addition, Bob is survived by two aunts: Bessie Johnson Thompson and Arnetha Johnson Robinson, two siblings: Randolph "Man" Johnson (Alberta) and Delores Haythe; two step-siblings: Joyce Patrick Morlin (John) and Horace Patrick, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Steven Newman and the team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital the wonderful care given to Bob. The family also expresses their gratitude to Bonita Cosby, Veronica Sorrell, Ann Sales, the Trinity family and friends for their many acts of kindness and support during our time of need.
Bob was cremated in accordance with his wishes and a celebration of his life will be held on June 30, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church (125 East 26th Street, Chicago, IL).
