Robert L. Stewart, 83, of Gilman died March 2, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
A graveside service and burial with military rites will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman with Rev. Jeff Blackman, pastor of the Gilman Community U.C.C., officiating.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Robert L. Stewart Memorial Fund.
Bob was born on May 12, 1926, in Gilman, the son of George E. and Emily Green Stewart. He was raised in Gilman and was a 1943 graduate of Gilman High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II.
On December 4, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Dannen, in Marshalltown. The couple lived in Port Angeles, Washington for 9 years where he was employed with Crown-Zellerbach Paper Mill. They returned to Gilman in 1963, where he owned and operated Bob's Tavern. He retired in 1988. He was an active member of the Gilman American Legion.
Bob loved his family dearly and enjoyed the weekly Sunday gatherings at his home. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and took great pride in the upkeep of his yard.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Gilman; three daughters, Paula (Dennis) Weaver of Gilman, Janine (Kim) Muckler of Marshalltown, and Lee Ann (Paul Ainley) Stewart of Gilman; one sister, Alberta Coleman of Melbourne; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and eleven brothers and sisters, Florence, Emory, Etna, Kenny, Louise, Jessie, Doris, Harry, George, Chuck, and Herb.
