Dr. Robert Lloyd Bell of Coatesville
Robert Lloyd Bell, M.D., 87, of Coatesville, died on August 17, 2011 in Annapolis, Maryland after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Matthews Bell and two children; Robert Matthews Bell of Coatesville, and Louise Bell Devanny of Annapolis, Md.; a son-in-law, Scott W Devanny; and one granddaughter, Anna Louise (Boo) Devanny of Annapolis.
He was born on September 3, 1923 to Nellie Pearl Fait and Samuel Lowry Bell in McKeesport.
He graduated from McKeesport High School, Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. and the University of Pittsburgh Medical School.
After medical school, Dr. Bell completed his Internship at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh. He began his surgery residency training at the VA Hospital in Aspinwall, Pa. and continued his neurosurgery residency at Brooklyn Hospital and Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.
In 1951, he was drafted and assigned to the Army Hospital in Munich, Germany for two years and upon his return joined the 361st Army Reserve General Hospital. He was Board Certified in Neurosurgery and served as an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn where he conducted research, taught, and operated for many years.
In 1962, Dr. Bell became a neurosurgeon with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Wadsworth, Kansas and later transferred with the VA to Coatesville. He continued to serve as a surgeon in the U.S. Army Reserves until his retirement as a Colonel in 1974. Later, Bell opened a neurosurgery private practice in Chester County, where he served on the staffs of Chester County Hospital, Brandywine Hospital, and Paoli Hospital.
Dr. Bell developed an interest in nuclear medicine and became Board Certified in Nuclear Medicine in 1976. Bell was one of the founders of the American College of Nuclear Medicine and was a past President of the organization. He authored nineteen publications covering Neurosurgery and Nuclear Medicine and was a recipient of the Gold Medal of the American College of Nuclear Medicine in 1987. For his work in the neurosurgery and nuclear medical fields, Dr. Bell was awarded the Legion of Honor by the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation in Philadelphia in April 1982. He also received the prestigious Harvey Cushing Society’s Silver Stick Award.
His membership in professional organizations included election as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and a delegate of the American Medical Association. Dr. Bell was also a Fellow of the Congress of the Neurological Surgery and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a member of the Chester County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Philadelphia Neurological Society and many more.
Dr. Bell was a member of the American Legion, the Philadelphia Continental Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Capitol Hill Club.
Bell was also a past Elder of the Presbyterian Church and a member of the Downingtown Presbyterian Church.

The funeral is private but a memorial service will be held in the fall in Downingtown.
