TOPEKA, Kan. (Associated Press) -- Robert H. Miller, a former Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice, died Thursday. He was 90.

The court said Miller died at a Topeka hospital, but that the family declined to disclose the cause of death.

Miller was appointed to the court in 1975 by Gov. Robert Bennett. He served as chief justice from September 1988 until he retired from the bench in September 1990.

His legal career began in 1946, after four years in the Army. He went on to serve as Paola city attorney and Miami County attorney. He became a Miami County district court judge in 1961, then a federal magistrate in 1969.

After retiring from the bench, Miller served on the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission.
