Our father, Bob James, joined our mom, his granddaughter, Barbara Chirles, and family and friends in heaven on January 2, 2011. The Lord blessed him with 83 wonderful years. Our dad was the firstborn child of Ollie and June James of Edwardsville, PA. He was later joined by his lovely sister Audrey and brother Dick, both of whom survive him. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While stationed in Norfolk, he met his beautiful Derlie Lewis of Lowland, NC who agreed to become his bride. In 1950 our father joined the Traffic Dept. of Norfolk Southern Railway, and he bought his first home in Virginia Beach in 1956 where our parents raised their 3 children, Bobby James, June James DeLauney and Sharon Hwalek. After almost 45 years in the maritime business, he retired from the Virginia Port Authority. Dad was a charter member and past president of the Woodstock Lions Club. He was a member of the Indian River Masonic Lodge #252, a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason, and the Khedive Shrine Temple. He was a faithful member of Providence Presbyterian Church, the Homestead Civic League, and a volunteer for many years with Meals on Wheels. Our father loved to golf, and we had many a good rounds with him. But with 60 years of golf under his belt, it was hard to take honors on the tee! Left to cherish their memories of being spoiled by him are his grandkids, Denise Holland, Chris Hwalek, Jimmy and Michael Heath and some very precious great-grandkids too. Our mom and dad spent almost 63 years together loving each other, loving us and always supporting us on many levels. They lived by example, and we can only hope to honor them by following close in those footsteps. Though cancer devastated his body, our father was devoted to the care of his ailing wife, even as his own strength diminished. The Lord took the beautiful Derlie James home on December 3, 2010. We are grateful to Providence Presbyterian Church for their love and support to our parents and family. The family would also like to give thanks to the compassionate staff at The Memory Center and especially our parents' dedicated caregivers, Patricia Brown, Rhonda Wilson and Kelly Outland. We will celebrate our mom and dad's lives together on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, 3600 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA. The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m., and a memorial service will be conducted in their honor at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Providence Presbyterian Church, 5497 Providence Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23464 or American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
