Robert P. Fitzgerald, 93, beloved husband of Harriet Gaffney Fitzgerald, died Sunday March 6, 2011 at his home in West Hartford. Bob had a brilliant mind, a dry sense of humor, and was dedicated to his family. Born in New Haven, the son of the late William and Mary Jackson Fitzgerald, he had lived in West Hartford most of his life, spending his summers at Black Point, and many winters in Ponce Inlet, FL after his retirement. He was an engineering graduate of Yale University (1939). Bob's career in management at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, UTC, enabled him to travel the world, and he frequently visited Europe, Japan and Australia. He was a former member of the Country Club of Farmington and a parishioner of St. Peter Claver Church in West Hartford. Bob was also on the Board of St. Francis Hospital for many years, and co-chaired the fundraising effort to build a new wing. He is survived by his wife Harriet, to whom he had been married for 66 years, his four daughters: Jane Marcin, longtime resident of Glastonbury, now of Vernon; Betsy Fitzgerald and her husband Douglas Paal of Bethesda, MD; Nancy Fitzgerald of West Hartford; and Ann Fitzgerald and her husband Christopher Sammartano of Ipswich, MA. His grandchildren, Christine Marcin and her husband Andrew Stifel, David Marcin, Alice and Victoria Paal, and Cooper Sammartano also survive him. A private burial will be this Saturday, with services and a celebration of his life at 12:30 pm at The McAuley, located at 275 Steele Road in West Hartford. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the charity of your choice.
