Robert Lee Thompson, 89 of Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, formerly of Evansdale, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011 from a lengthy illness. He was born to Jasper Lee and Lola (Rockwood) Thompson on March 6, 1922 in Janesville, Iowa. Robert served our country, while in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942-1944. He married Florence Mae Rieck on October 1, 1944 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Florence has preceded Robert in death on February 25, 2011. Robert was employed through the years as a Plasterer for contractors and construction companies. He enjoyed fishing, traveling- including 48 states and Canada, collecting stamps and beer cans. Robert very much enjoyed working on his family history book, sharing it with his family and friends. He is preceded in death by five brothers; Roland and Harland Thompson, Oliver, George, and William Johnson; four sisters; Elizabeth Bird, Emma Rathford, Daisy Dennis, and Jessie Kutz. Robert is survived by two sons, Robert (Diane) Thompson of Waterloo and Richard Thompson of Denver, Colo; six grandchildren, Kristen (George Steinke) Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Amy (Eric) Huggins of Lee's Summitt, Mo., Mark (Meagan) Thompson of Altoona, Ellen (Bryan) Sandholm and Jeffery (Lindsay) Thompson, both of Ankeny, and Matthew (Jamie) Thompson of Marion; 16 great-grandchildren, a brother, Tom (Kathy) Thompson of Cedar Falls, a sister; Catherine (Jerome) Mierose of Lake Havasu, Arz and a sister in law; Marlys (Lyle) Wrage of Gladbrook.
