Roger William Enger, 74, of Punta Gorda, Florida (formerly of Mt. Healthy, OH) lost his battle with lung cancer and went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 12:50am. Roger served in the US Navy aboard the USS General WA Mann. Following this, he retired from Cincinnati Bell Telephone. Roger was involved in many community organizations. He was the Reigning Ponce of the Royal Order of Juan Ponce de Leon Conquistadors (he was a major force involved in the construction of the Ponce de Leon statue in Gilchrist Park,). He orchestrated and was working with the city in getting a portion of Marion Ave to be renamed to Ponce de Leon Parkway. Roger obtained his 40th year perfect attendance with the Kiwanis Club. Roger was also a member of the Punta Gorda Elks 2606, Moose Lodge 2121, American Legion 103, Past VP of the General WA Mann Association, Telephone Pioneers, Charlotte Park Civic Association, Florida International Air Show Volunteer and the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club. He received many honorary awards including Kiwanian of the Year, Kiwanis Legion of Honor, Past President of Cincinnati Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis Community Service Award. He was an avid fishermen, enjoyed motorcycling and traveling with his wife Ramona throughout the United States.
Roger meant so much to his loving wife Ramona, and she certainly will miss him. He also leaves his mother Alfreda Enger of Mt. Healthy OH, adult children Rhonda Williams of Boston, MA; Denise Hanley of Austin, TX and Gregg Enger of West Chester, OH, along with his seven grandchildren and so many friends, they could not all be listed. Roger never met a stranger and those that he met were touched in some way by his warmth and kindness.
A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 635 E Marion Ave, Punta Gorda, FL 33950. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am till the service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ponce Roger Enger Scholarship Fund c/o The ROPC Foundation, P.O. Box 510664, Punta Gorda, FL 33951-0664.
