Ronald Alan Barrett
Columbia - Ronald Alan Barrett, 63, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2009. Born in Chicago, IL, on July 8, 1946, Ron grew up in Columbia, S.C., where he attended A.C. Flora High School and the University of South Carolina. After receiving a law degree from USC, Ron served four years of active duty in the JAG Corps of the U.S. Air Force, stationed in New Jersey and Alaska. Ron later served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, retiring with the rank of colonel. After his active duty, Ron returned to Columbia with his family and began a legal practice that focused on domestic law, particularly the rights of children.
Ron was the son of Walter John Barrett and Rodgers Dantzler Barrett, both deceased. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susan Beskid Barrett; his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Hawthorne Barrett and Jenna Aldridge Barrett; his grandson, Lake Hawthorne Barrett, all of Columbia; his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce Barrett and Bill Marjenhoff, of Charleston, S.C.; his nephew, Barrett Evans, and his wife, Jennifer Evans, and children, Sloane and Thompson Evans, all of Charles Town, WV; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim Beskid and Novella Beskid; his nephew and niece, Austin Beskid and Caroline Beskid, all of Columbia.
Ron was a wonderful grandfather and uncle to the children in his family, Lake, Austin and Caroline. He was always there to support and encourage them, and he rarely missed any of their many sporting events or performances. He also treasured the family’s annual beach trips, when he was able to spend more time with them.
Ron was a skilled and respected attorney, a talented musician, and an avid fan of football and Formula One auto racing. Mostly, though, Ron was a loving and beloved part of the lives of his numerous family members and friends. His intelligence, compassion and quick wit enriched many lives and will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will host a celebration of Ron’s life on Sunday, October 18, 2009 from 4 until 6 p.m. at Doc’s Bar-Be-Que on Shop Road in Columbia. The family asks that you not send any memorials or flowers. Instead, please gather with those closest to you and let them know how much they mean to you. This is the best way to honor Ron, who did this every day. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
