Ronald G. Lawrence, age 76, of Marshall, passed away and returned home to his Lord on Monday, September 3, 2007, while a patient at Oaklawn Hospital in the loving care of his wife. Ron was born October 31, 1930 at home in Albion Township to Wilford and Margaret (Rising) Lawrence. He spent his youth in the Homer area, graduating from Homer High School in 1949. While in high school, he met Katherine Mae “Kathy” Zuck at a Homer United Methodist Church youth fellowship, a hay ride. She caught his eye, and he hers, and they became high school sweethearts. That love grew, and the couple were married on June 3, 1950 at the Homer United Methodist Church. They have enjoyed a loving marriage these past 57 years. Ron has lived in the Homer and Marshall area all of his life. In high school, Ron worked for his grandfather who owned the local mill. After graduation he drove milk truck, picking up at the local dairy farmers, including his future father-in-law’s farm! Ron went to work at the John Deere Dealership in Homer, where he was able to use his mechanical skills. He worked at the Ford Dealership in Battle Creek as Assistant Service Manager, and then at Boshears Ford in Marshall in a similar capacity. Ron also drove truck for the Marshall Yellow Freight Terminal, and was the manager of the Snelling and Snelling Employment Group in Marshall. Ron had special training (and interest) in small engine repair, and worked at Stanley Lawn And Garden, and later at Darling’s Hardware until his retirement. He then did small engine work from his home for a number of years. Ron was a faithful and dedicated member of West Eckford Missionary Church. He had served on the church board, and for a number of years mowed the church lawns. He and wife Kathy had enjoyed their place at Marble Lake, where Ron liked to fish. Another shared hobby at the lake was snowmobiling in the winter, with the “Snowbirds Snowmobile Club”. Ron and Kathy enjoyed traveling together. He was a talented woodworker, creating special projects in his home wood shop. Ron created the communion cup holders for his church, and created special projects for the Vacation Bible School at the church. Surviving are his wife Katherine “Kathy” Lawrence; brother, Wilford A. (Ethel) Lawrence of Elkhart,IN; sisters, Vara Hiatt of Marshall and Linda Lawrence of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Jean Lawrence when she was three years of age, and his parents. Friends may call at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2PM to 9PM, where the family will be present to greet friends and share memories. Funeral services to celebrate his life and his Lord will be held at Kempf Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 11AM with Rev. David Nichols of West Eckford Missionary Church officiating. Interment will follow in Albion Memory Gardens. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to West Eckford Missionary Church. Assistance with memorials is available at Kempf Funeral Home.
