Roslyn Massey Packwood was born April 10, 1936 in Elizabeth NJ. She was the youngest of four children born to the late Robert F. and Tessie O. Massey. Roslyn was educated in the Roselle school system and graduated from Abraham Clark High School. She attended Livingstone College in Salisbury North Carolina where she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. She later met and married Frederick R. Packwood in 1958. Fred and "Roz" lived in Roselle until they purchased their first home in Linden New Jersey where they raised their four children. Roslyn was a secretary for the Ace Scientific Supply Co. for many years. She later took a job with Eastern/Continental Airlines where she worked as a sales representative. Upon her retiring from the Airline, she began working as an office manager for the Massey Insurance Agency in Newark and Elizabeth, which was founded by her late brother Raymond. Fred and Roz moved to Piscataway New Jersey where they resided until Fred ultimately retired from General Motors in 1996. Being both retired and having an empty nest, they decided to relocate to Las Vegas, Nevada where they lived for 10 years. Feeling far too removed from her family, her church and life-long friends Roz "persuaded" Fred to sell their home in Las Vegas and return to New Jersey. They took up residence in Woodbridge until they finally settled back where their lifes-journey started, Roselle. She was a life-long member of Heard AME Church where she attended Sunday school as a child, and sang in several choirs as a teen and as an adult. Roslyn loved reading novels, and watching women's basketball. She also loved the occasional bright lights and loud ringing bells of slot machines in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Roslyn became ill in 2009 which required several hospital stays. She never stopped fighting her illness and always reminded those who loved her that she" took all her illness and ailments to the alter and left them there." She succumbed quietly at home on Tuesday December 21, 2010 surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert F. Massey and Tessie O. Massey and three siblings, Doris Massey Eubanks, Robert A. Massey, and Raymond J Massey. Roslyn,"Gran "or "La La" as she was affectionately called by her grandchildren, leaves to cherish her memory; her husband of 52 years Frederick R. Packwood, of Roselle. Her daughter Andrea Simmons of Raleigh NC; two sons Guy F. Packwood (Janet) of Somerset, and Scott W. Packwood (Deborah) also of Somerset; and daughter Patricia Packwood-Smith, of Roselle. Her adopted son Charles Joynes of Chattanooga, TN; two sisters, Rita Flowers (Alex) of Lawrenceville, GA and Sharon Frazier of Roselle. A special sister Lucille Massey of Roselle, a loving first cousin Wilma Luiga of Roselle, an uncle David Hancock (Delores) of Melville, NY, a sister-in-law Eunice Burchall of Saint Georges, Bermuda; a brother-in-law Edwin Packwood of Elizabeth, NJ, 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, her life-long friends who along with Roz were dubbed the "KINDERGARTEN 5" Francena Reed, Janice Freeman, Barbara Briggs-Turner, and Katherine Pollard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members. This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Roslyn Massey Packwood. You are invited to add a Tribute in her memory.
